Google Desktop is web based search data application. Although it’s still in beta version for Linux but I think it’s very useful for us to find any informations that stay in our computer.
Step 1. Download the package
Go to http://desktop.google.com/linux/ and click ‘Download Google Desktop‘ to download the program.The file size is 7.5MB.

Choose Debian/Ubuntu format.
- Choose ‘Save to Disk’ and click ‘OK’. Downloading program will automatically start.
Step 2. Installation.
From Ubuntu Terminal screen (Applications > Accessories > Terminal), type:
Goto your the directory where you download the Google Desktop installation file.
For example, I downloaded the installation file in “mydata/my_ubuntu_collection/packages/”, so I type:
taufanlubis@toshiba:~$ cd mydata/my_ubuntu_collection/packages/
taufanlubis@toshiba:~/mydata/my_ubuntu_collection/packages$ sudo dpkg -i google-desktop-linux_current_i386.deb
Selecting previously deselected package google-desktop-linux.
(Reading database … 180403 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking google-desktop-linux (from google-desktop-linux_current_i386.deb) …
Setting up google-desktop-linux (1.1.0.0068) …

A ‘Term of Service’ will occur. Just click ‘Accept and Install’ to continue the installation process.
Step 3. Run the program.
Click Applications > Google Desktop > Google Desktop.

A Google Desktop icon will be shown on top Desktop panel.

Double click the ‘Google Desktop‘ to display ‘Google Quick Search Box‘.

For this sample, I type ‘iptables’ on the text box and press ‘ENTER’.

You can click directly on the link or click ‘…See all results in a browser‘.

As you can see below, words ‘iptables’ are found in 10 emails, 45 files and 15 web history.

I killed Windows XP and went to Ubuntu Hardy a few months back : not being trained or experienced at much except punching buttons and getting in trouble, I had it done at my usual guru’s shop.
Still pissing around, I downloaded 8.10
Checking up on Google Desktop – which I had put on my XP – I found Gnome has issues with desktop icons. If I’m understanding the forum correctly, Ubuntu 8.10 will break Google Desktop.
No… Naughty… I KILLED WINDOWS WITH MY BLACKNESS!
Sidebar to that, I downloaded Konqueror. It ran for a while, but seems to be initializing in Firefox.
