If you are looking for Web Server or FTP server and you don’t to have a complicated process, xampp can be considered as your choice.
The most thing I like from XAMPP is separate setup with the Linux system and it’s easy to use. So, next time I don’t need it, I just remove its directory, and that’s it. I don’t need to do uninstall process.
XAMPP has been tested to work on SuSE, RedHat, Mandrake and Debian, mean it works with Ubuntu.
There are 4 steps to do before you can run XAMPP on Linux.
Step 1. Downloading
First, you have to download the program from http://apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html.
Click “XAMPP for Linux” to open “XAMPP for Linux” web page.
Select “XAMPP Linux 1.6.6” to download xampp-linux-1.6.6.tar.gz. It’s the source code program. We have to compile before it can run. The version number that you see below can be different at the time you go to the Xampp website, because there it may has a new update or version.
Step 2. Installing
After downloading process complete, go to your download directory. In my laptop, I save on mydata/new_download/ directory. The directory can be different. It depends on your download directory default.
Now, open your Linux Terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and go to your “download directory” using ‘cd‘ command following with your directory name. Check the xamp-linux-1.6.2.tar.gz file using ‘ls -l‘ command.
Copy the xampp-linux.1.6.2.tar.gz file to ‘/opt‘ directory.
Extract the xampp-linux.1.6.2.tar.gz file.
The xampp-linux.1.6.2.tar.gz file will be extracted to ‘lampp‘ directory.
To check the result, go to ‘lampp’ directory using ‘cd’ command and check the content using ‘ls -l‘ command.
If you see in the picture below, ‘lampp‘ file with green color font, is an executable file. This is the file that you need to run the xampp server.
Step 3. Start the server
To run the xampp server, type ‘sudo ./lampp start‘.
Step 4. Test it.
Open your browser program and type ‘localhost‘. If you have the screen below, you’ve xampp run in your system already.
Click ‘English’ to enter XAMPP for Linux welcoming screen.
That’s it. Now, you have Apache, MySQL and FTP server in your system already.

Thank you so much for this great step-by-step tutorial. This makes it eazier to install xampp in ubuntu. Now I have xampp installed in both ubuntu and windows under the same box. I’m moving from windows and I tried to move my website which is under development to my newly installed ubuntu xampp but couldn’t get it working. This is what I did:
I copied the folder /xampp/htdocs/my-website-folder to /opt/lampp/htdocs under ubuntu, and xampp/mysql/data/my-database-name to /opt/lampp/var/mysql under ubuntu.
any help..? thanks

Hello,
Thank you for the tutorial. I could not start lampp for days. Reading in some forums they said may be the ssl, stop programs that use port 80, etc. Nothing to do.
Then I have read your tutorial and found that to start you can do ‘./lampp start’ instead of just ‘lampp start’ and BINGO! it runs.
Thanks a lot.
Antonio
thank’s very very much
